Why it matters

Skin is the only thing in the frame the audience knows.

They will accept any colour for a wall and none for a face.

Viewers have no reference for what colour a building should be. They have a lifetime of reference for skin, and a face that is slightly wrong reads as wrong immediately, even to people who cannot say why.

This asymmetry is why skin deserves its own node rather than being handled inside the general grade. It is the one element with an external standard, and it needs to be judged and adjusted separately from the creative look sitting on top of it.

The good news is that the fix is usually small. Most skin problems are a modest correction applied in the right place, not a large one applied everywhere.

Position

After balance, before the look.

The order is not a preference. Any other position causes work.

Skin sits third in a fixed chain: exposure, then white balance, then face, then look.

It must come after balance, because judging skin against a cast is impossible — you will correct for the cast and then correct it again when the cast is removed.

It must come before the look, because the look is a creative layer applied to a correct image. Fixing skin after the look means every subsequent look change breaks the skin correction, and you end up going backwards up the chain repeatedly.

Nearly every complaint about skin being difficult to grade traces back to it being addressed in the wrong position.

The selection

Qualify or track, but keep it loose.

A tight selection is what makes a correction look like a correction.

Two ways to isolate skin: a hue qualifier, or a tracked window. Use whichever is more stable on the shot — a qualifier where the background does not share the skin's hue range, a window where it does.

Whichever you use, soften the edge generously. A hard-edged selection produces a visible patch that moves with the subject, and it is more noticeable than the problem it fixed.

Check the selection by viewing it as a matte and watching the whole shot, not one frame. Qualifiers that look perfect on a still frequently break when the subject turns or the light changes, and that is where the flicker comes from.

The correction

Small moves, and usually only three of them.

If you are making large adjustments here, the problem is upstream.

Inside the node, the useful moves are few:

  • Hue — a small rotation towards the correct range. Usually a few degrees, not a large shift.
  • Saturation — most often down. Over-saturated skin is more common than under.
  • Luminance — a slight lift or reduction so the face sits where the eye expects.

That is generally the whole node. If skin needs more than this, the exposure or balance nodes are not doing their job, and fixing them removes most of what you were about to correct here.

Judge it in context

Evaluate the face at full frame, in motion, not zoomed in on a still. Skin that looks slightly wrong at hundred percent magnification often looks entirely correct at viewing size, and over-correcting on a magnified still is a common way to produce a face that looks plastic in the finished piece.

Across a scene

Match faces to each other, not to an ideal.

Consistency between shots matters more than any individual shot being perfect.

A cut between two shots where the same person is slightly different reads as an error. A whole scene where everyone is slightly warm reads as a choice.

So grade faces as a group: bring the shots of a scene up together, get one right, then match the others to it rather than grading each from scratch.

The reference should be a mid-shot in the dominant lighting, not the most flattering close-up. Anchoring on an unusually good frame means every other shot is chasing something the scene does not support.

Different skin tones

One node, adjusted per shot, without a preset.

A saved skin correction applied across a cast will make some of them wrong.

There is no universal skin value. Hue, saturation and luminance targets differ substantially between people, and a preset built on one will systematically misrepresent others — usually by desaturating darker skin or pushing lighter skin orange.

Keep the node in the tree as a fixed position, but set its values per shot, judged against the actual face rather than against a target.

The consistent element is the structure and the discipline of small moves. The values are always specific to who is in the frame.
